Ceredigion County Council website

When someone has died, you will need to report the death to many government departments and organisations.

In Ceredigion, the voluntary Tell Us Once service makes this process easier. You only need to provide the details to the Department for Work and Pensions once, and they will notify all participating organisations who need to know about the death.

How does Tell Us Once work?

When you register a death, the registrar will add the details of the deceased to the Tell Us Once national database. The registrar will then provide you with a letter containing a unique Tell Us Once reference number and instructions on how to use the service.

Visit the UK Government website - Tell Us Once to find out what information or documents you will need to have when you complete the second part of the service. These include, for example, the deceased’s passport, driving licence, national insurance number, and details of any benefits or entitlements they were getting.

How to access the service?

Once the death has been registered, you are able to complete the second part of the Tell Us Once service either:

Online

You can give the details to the Department for Work and Pensions online.

You must use the unique Tell Us Once reference number to log in:

Tell Us Once Online

Or

By telephone

Or

In person

If you attend at our office to register a death, the Tell Us Once service may be offered to you during the registration appointment.

Who does Tell Us Once notify about the death?

Many services can be notified and these include:

  • HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) – to deal with tax and cancel benefits
  • Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) – to cancel benefits and entitlements such as State Pension
  • Passport Office – to cancel a British passport
  • Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) – to cancel a driving licence
  • The local council – to cancel Housing Benefit, Council Tax Reduction, a Blue Badge and remove the person from the Electoral Register.

Tell Us Once will notify the applicable participating departments and organisations who will contact you directly if they need any more information.
